You Won’t Find These Specific Cattle Materials In Cosmetics, Either
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease, causes paralysis in the muscles. People went out of their way to avoid infected beef so they wouldn’t be afflicted with it. Some products do use cattle materials to use. In order to prevent an outbreak, the FDA does prohibit cattle materials from being used.
These include materials from nonambulatory cattle, any material from cattle that have not been inspected or passed, or mechanically separated beef. This list of materials does not include tallow, tallow derivatives, or any products derived from milk or hide. This is because these materials are not likely to be infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Thus, you can use them safely in certain products.
