23. Baking soda and Vinegar for soft heels Let’s face it, we subject our feet to a lot of punishment. We spend plenty of time letting… Simi - May 22, 2017

The beauty industry is a diverse, money-making machine. It encapsulates everything from hair care to skin care for both men and women and is worth, literally, billions of dollars. In 2015, the beauty industry generated $56.2 billion dollars in the United States alone. Beauty products are notorious for being quite pricey, with top-market brands like Elizabeth Arden, Avon, Chanel and Mary Kay able to sell a tube of moisturizer for more than $100 dollars.

But quantity doesn’t always equal quality, and there are ways you can get the same effect without breaking the bank. In fact, you probably have a wealth of beauty products in your kitchen already. It’s not so much about what you have, but what you do with it. A lot of household products and essentials can help you look after your face, body, and hair. You need to know the right combinations to use. But many of these beauty hacks offer you a natural alternative to the harmful chemicals that many store-bought products contain.

This is good news for those who have allergies and those who don’t have the funds to go and buy the so-called ‘good stuff’. These beauty hacks that are made up of natural products will make a difference and give you the desired effect without bankrupting you. Some may sound a bit unconventional, but their proponents swear by them. It’s worth giving them a try. You never know, they might just be exactly what you need. Here are 40 inexpensive beauty remedies everybody should know.

1. Toothpaste for Acne

Acne is a huge skin condition for people all over the world. It’s a medical condition that is characterized by the occurrence of pimples, blackheads and cysts that can be brought on by things like puberty, hormonal imbalances and menstruation. There are four main factors that contribute to the development of acne which are: excess oil production, dead skin cells, clogged pores and bacteria. Acne can appear anywhere on the body, but is usually found on the face, neck, chest and back, because these areas contain the largest amounts of sebaceous (oil) glands. When the hair follicle becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells it becomes infected, which causes inflammation of the skin, pussing and redness. Acne usually affects teenagers but it’s not uncommon in adults. There are many different avenues of treatment for acne, including over-the-counter creams and ointments, antibiotics and medications.

One easy and inexpensive home remedy for acne is toothpaste. While it can’t prevent further acne breakouts, it can effectively treat any existing pimples. This is thanks to the clotting properties in toothpaste that decrease redness and swelling while preventing bacteria from spreading to other pores. Toothpaste dries out the pimple, which helps shrink it and lessen the appearance. Before you apply toothpaste to the pimple, wash your hands thoroughly first. Then use your index finger to gently apply toothpaste directly onto the pimple, being careful not to rub too hard as this may further irritate it. Leave the toothpaste on overnight, or for at least one hour, then rinse off with cool water.

2. Sugar Scrub for Chapped Lips

Sugar often gets a bad name for being unhealthy. While it’s not good to consume lots of sugar in your diet, sugar is actually very good for your skin, and it’s a perfect natural remedy for many beauty products, especially chapped lips. There are no oil glands in the lips, so it can be hard to keep them adequately moisturized. If the lips lack proper moisture, they can become dry, flaky, chapped and painful. To counteract this, it’s important to keep your lips soft and well-hydrated by using a lip balm like Vaseline or even coconut oil, drinking lots of water, avoiding licking your lips, and protecting them from sun damage by applying sunscreen.

If your lips have become chapped and flaky, avoid picking at them as this will only make them worse. There are many beauty products aimed at exfoliating dry skin on the lips, but they can be expensive. Using basic sugar from the kitchen will be just as effective, and much cheaper. Simply mix a tablespoon of sugar (any kind will do, but organic raw brown sugar works best) with a tablespoon of your favorite carrier oil like coconut or jojoba, and apply onto your lips with gentle, circular motions. Use every few days or when your lips become especially dry for softer, healthier lips.

3. Baking Soda for Yellow Teeth

Discolored teeth can be a common point of embarrassment for many people and can be caused by a variety of things. Generally speaking, the cause of yellow or discolored teeth can fall into one of two categories: extrinsic and intrinsic stains. Extrinsic stains are on the surface of the tooth, called the enamel. This is the hard, outer layer of the tooth, and while it’s harder than bone, it can be stained quite easily. Dark-colored food and drink like red wine, coffee, blueberries and pomegranates have the potential to cause stains, as can smoking or chewing tobacco. Genetics, lifestyle, age and health can also contribute to yellow teeth, but luckily there are many things you can do to counteract yellowed teeth like watching what you eat, undertaking a proper dental hygiene routine, or whitening your teeth either at the dentist or at home.

Baking Soda for dirty teeth. Shutterstock

Baking soda is a cheap, effective natural remedy for teeth whitening. Baking soda is often found in toothpaste and whitening solutions due to its ability to remove plaque and whiten teeth. It also contains antibacterial properties and can neutralize the acidity in the mouth. To whiten teeth with baking soda, simply mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with a teaspoon or two of water or lemon juice; enough to form a paste. Dip your toothbrush into the mixture and brush your teeth as usual for at least two minutes. Repeat every second day until results can be seen, doing it just once or twice a week for upkeep. Baking soda is mildly abrasive, and using it too often can cause damage by eroding the enamel on the teeth.

4. Baby Powder for Oily Hair

Oily hair can be the bane of many women’s (and men’s) lives. While it may not be necessarily life-threatening, it can still be embarrassing, and there are a whole wealth of hair products out there to help counteract it. But unless you know the cause, it can be hard to control. Oily hair is simply the result of the natural process that happens as our hair grows. The oil comes from the sebaceous glands, which are found at the base of each and every strand of hair. The sebum that is secreted from these glands keeps the hair healthy, smooth and moisturized, which strengthens it and makes it less prone to breakage. When this sebum production becomes excessive, oily hair occurs.

Sprinkling baby powder onto the roots of the hair is a tried and true remedy for oily hair. It contains astringent properties that work to absorb excess oil when it’s applied, and it can help eliminate greasy hair and promote freshness and volume. Baby powder is made up of talc and perfume and it’s the basic idea behind dry shampoo, but it’s a much cheaper alternative. To use baby powder on greasy hair, tip some out onto a large makeup brush. Shake off the excess powder and dab the makeup brush across the roots, then massage the powder in with your fingers. Your hair will instantly feel less greasy, but it’s important to ensure you’ve blended it all in correctly, otherwise it can cause a whitish tint to the hair. Once it’s properly blended, comb out your hair from root to tip using a wide-toothed comb.

5. Cold Spoon for Puffy Eyes

Puffy eyes are a common cosmetic issue that can be caused by things like lack of sleep, crying, stress, allergies, genetics, hormonal imbalances and more. Swelling around the eyes can also mean there’s an excess of fluid in the area. This is normal and can be experienced all around the body, but because the skin under the eyes is so thin, it can appear quite prominent. The best way to treat puffy eyes is to first uncover what is causing it. Too much salt in the diet, sinus issues, dehydration and aging are some of the things that contribute to puffy eyes, and there are different forms of treatment including getting better sleep, taking allergy medication, drinking more water, changing the diet to incorporate healthy fruits and vegetables, and certain topical ointments.

If puffy eyes and under-eye circles are particularly bad, there are different cosmetic treatment options available too, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion and dermal filler injections. However, puffy eyes can be treated with some very simple, yet effective, utensils. Pressing cold spoons onto your eyes can reduce puffiness and the appearance of dark under-eye circles by constricting the blood vessels, which slows blood flow to the area and decreases swelling. Simply refrigerate four or more metal teaspoons until they’re cold, then place the rounded base onto each eye until the spoon turns warm. If puffiness persists, follow it up with a second cold spoon for better results.

6. Sugar Wax for Unwanted Facial Hair

Facial hair is usually only sported by men, but there are times in a woman’s life where she might discover some unwanted facial hair of her own. Excess hair can be an embarrassing problem for many women, and while it is usually just a cosmetic problem, it can also be a sign of something more serious. Unwanted facial hair can appear during pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause, as hormonal imbalances can sometimes stimulate hair growth. It can also be a sign of insulin resistance, which can be caused by lack of nutrition, a diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugars. and obesity. Facial hair is also a common symptom of polycystic ovarian syndrome, so if you do notice any unwanted or excessive facial and/or body hair, it’s important to get it checked out by your healthcare professional.

If you’re suffering from some harmless fuzz on your face, there are many different beauty treatments you can undergo to remove it. Laser hair removal is a popular way of getting rid of unwanted hair, but treatment can be expensive. Luckily, there are things you can do from home to get rid of it too. Sugar waxing is a natural, albeit peculiar, method of removing hair. It’s been a popular treatment for years, especially in the Middle East, and it involves melting sugar down into a wax, applying the wax onto the skin, then ripping off to remove the hair. Sugar waxing is very similar to regular waxing, but it is much gentler on the skin. Regular waxing removes the top layer of skin as well as the hair, whereas sugar waxing just removes the hair. The sugar also acts as a skin softener and exfoliant, and leaves your skin baby-smooth as well as hairless.

7. Egg Whites for Oily Skin

Eggs are a powerhouse of nutrients. They contain healthy fats, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, K, D, B6 and B12, and minerals such as zinc, folate, iron, copper, phosphorus and selenium. Eggs contain only 77 calories and are an excellent source of antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin. Not only are eggs an amazing source of protein and a great addition to any diet, they’re also a surprisingly effective ingredient to include in your beauty routine. Eggshells can be used as an exfoliant, egg yolk can treat unhealthy, brittle nails and egg whites can promote hair growth, cleanse impurities and tighten the pores.

Egg whites are also an effective treatment for oily skin. Oily skin can often be hard to maintain, and many beauty products that claim to treat greasy skin sometimes exacerbate the problem because they contain ingredients that can trigger oil production and further irritate the skin. Oily skin can be caused by things like hormones, environment, stress, diet, age and even makeup. Egg whites can combat oily skin by shrinking the pores, preventing clogged skin cells, removing dirt and excess oil and tightening the skin. To make your own egg white face mask, separate the egg whites from the yolk of one large egg. Discard the egg yolk and add 3 to 4 drops of lemon juice to the egg white, then whisk gently until the ingredients are blended. Wash and dry your face, then apply the mixture using your fingers and massage it in using circular motions. Allow the mask to dry for at least 15 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water and apply a gentle, non-oily moisturizer.

8. Coconut Oil for Dry Skin

Dry skin is medically known as xeroderma or xerosic dermatitis, and it can be a common, irritating, painful problem for many people. It occurs when the skin lacks proper moisture, and it’s characterized by itching, flaking skin, redness, and even cracks or bleeding. Dry skin is caused by a variety of things like cold weather, dry climates, lack of nutrition, harsh soap and other chemicals, and some medications. Dry skin can affect anyone, but it’s more common as we age because the skin begins to slow the production of natural oils and lubricants that provide the necessary moisture. Dry skin can last anywhere between a few days to a few months or even years, and if it’s left untreated it can cause other problems like eczema, bacterial infections and skin rashes.

There are many different ways to treat dry skin, such as using antibacterial moisturizers and gentle soap, avoiding overly hot showers and excessive scratching, and using indoor room humidifiers to put moisture back into the air. Coconut oil is a perfect emollient to use on dry skin. It’s cheap and extremely effective, as it’s antibacterial, antifungal and can penetrate deep into the skin better than many moisturizers. Coconut oil contains vitamin E, which helps to protect the skin against damage and helps speed up cell regeneration. It also contains anti-inflammatory properties which can help reduce redness and irritation of dry skin, soothing and providing much-needed moisture. To use, simply apply coconut oil onto the skin after a shower. The oil softens and hydrates the skin as it is absorbed into the pores, drawing any impurities out at the same time.

9. Baking Soda for Blackheads

Blackheads are a common skin condition that often occurs as a feature of acne. They’re the result of excessive sebum production and can be caused by things like puberty, PMS, pregnancy and menopause. Blackheads appear dark due to melanin, a pigment that oxidizes and goes black when it’s exposed to the air. Blackheads form inside the pores on the skin when it becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells. They can be seen on the face, back, chest, neck, shoulders and arms, and can be treated by over-the-counter creams that contain ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, prescription medications, microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Contrary to popular belief, popping blackheads or forcibly removing them can often worsen the spot, inviting bacteria and infection that cause inflammation.

To prevent the formation of blackheads, wash your face regularly with a gentle antibacterial cleanser, use oil-free makeup products, and exfoliate at least once a week. A great, inexpensive exfoliant is baking soda. Baking soda is an alkalizing powder that is most commonly used in cooking and baking. When used on the skin, it softens the sebum and makes it easier to remove. It also sloughs away any dead skin cells and other debris that can cause skin problems. To use baking soda on blackheads, take one tablespoon of baking soda and add a few drops of water to it, enough to form a paste. You can also add a few drops of an essential oil for fragrance and added beauty benefit. Cleanse and wash your face with warm water, then apply the paste to your face while it’s still damp. Rub the mixture into your skin in small circles for two to three minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Follow it up with a gentle toner and a hydrating moisturizer.

10. Coconut Oil and Lemon Juice for Dandruff

Dandruff is a condition that occurs when the skin on the scalp flakes off. It’s also referred to as Pityriasis simplex capillitii, or scurf, and it is caused by a fungus known as Malassezia. Often, dandruff is experienced frequently by people with seborrheic dermatitis, a common skin condition that can affect the scalp, face, upper chest and back and causes the skin to appear red and flaky. Dandruff can also be caused by things like improper hygiene, yeast sensitivity, certain pre-existing skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema, lack of nutrition and even stress. Treatment for dandruff is relatively simple, and will usually involve an over-the-counter anti-fungal shampoo. These shampoos usually contain ingredients like salicylic acid, tea-tree oil, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide and zinc pyrithione, but if you’re looking for a more natural treatment, coconut oil and lemon juice can be just as effective.

Coconut oil is an extremely effective dandruff treatment because it contains natural anti-fungal properties that are able to kill the dandruff-causing fungus. Lemon juice is equally effective because it contains antimicrobial properties and citric acid which helps to bring dandruff under control. To use, simply mix two tablespoons of coconut oil with one teaspoon of lemon juice and massage it through your hair, rubbing it into the scalp. Leave it on to soak for at least one hour then rinse it out with cold water, followed by a mild shampoo. You can also add a squeeze of grapefruit juice for even better results. Beauty products don’t have to break your bank. By doing proper research and exploring different avenues, you can open up a whole new range of cheap, effective remedies.

11. Mint leaves for dark circles under eyes

We usually think the dark circles under our eyes are due to lack of sleep. While this can be true, other factors, such as age, pollution, improper diet and genetics are also culprits. The skin under the eyes is much thinner than that on the rest of your body. Those dark blue circles are the result of light being reflected off the blood vessels sitting under the skin. As you get older, the skin becomes even thinner, and this is why many older people, more of than not, have dark circles under their eyes. Younger people also suffer from dark circles, especially if they’ve spent all night out on the town. When your body is tired, it produces more cortisol to give you the energy to stay awake. This increases blood volume which causes blood vessels to engorge (hence the dark circles).

The good news is that mint leaves can be used for dark circles. The menthol in the mint improves circulation, and it is a natural astringent which means it constricts the blood vessels under the eyes, making them less apparent. Mint is antiseptic, antibacterial and antimicrobial so it kills the toxins that help to damage the skin under the eyes. The vitamin C in the mint helps to promote collagen production which makes the skin firmer. Its soothing properties also help to relax the eyes. To use the mint, puree mint leaves in a blender to make a paste. Apply the paste under the eyes and leave on for 10-20 minutes. Wipe it off with a damp cloth and pat the area dry. Apply on a daily basis to benefit. You may add a tablespoon or two of olive oil to the mint paste for further nourishment.

12. Apple Cider Vinegar for shiny hair

Many clarifying formulas leave your hair feeling dry and frizzy. They take away the product buildup but affect the health of your hair. Many of them contain sulfates and other unnatural products that damage your hair over time. Apple cider vinegar rinses have the same results, and yet they do not strip your hair of its natural oils. It may sound strange because you would think that vinegar would be drying. On the contrary, it gently dissolves product buildup and leaves your hair feeling smooth and shiny. The citric acid in the apple cider vinegar destroys all the gunk and buildup and at the same time polishes each hair strand into a bouncy, hydrated state.

To make it all you need to do is mix one part of apple cider vinegar with three parts water and use it after shampoo. The best way to do it is to pour the ACV into a plastic cup before getting into the shower and then adding the water when you’re ready to rinse. Tilt your head back and pour the mixture over your scalp. Remember to keep your eyes and mouth closed just in case. Massage it into your scalp and then rinse thoroughly and condition as you normally would. You may not like the smell, and your shower will smell of apple cider vinegar. Your hair will also smell a little until it dries, but you won’t care because when it’s dry, you will see how awesome it looks. This rinse is safe for pretty much every type of hair – curly, frizzy, straight and even if its color-treated. As apple cider vinegar is acidic, you need to limit yourself to doing an ACV rinse once a week.

13. Extra Virgin Olive Oil for removing eye makeup

Most of us love wearing makeup but taking it off isn’t fun. You may have treated yourself to expensive eye makeup removers, only to find that you were allergic to them or didn’t do the job properly. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is all you need to remove stubborn eye makeup at the end of the day. You won’t have to scrub furiously to get rid of your makeup which is enough to give you more wrinkles. It does not burn or sting your eyes because it’s all natural. Some people suffer from sensitive eyes that seem to water frequently. Using EVOO to remove makeup instead of commercial ones that may contain thickeners, emulsifiers, etc. can be the answer for them instead of having to avoid wearing any makeup at all.

Credit: Freepik

It is wise to pour the olive oil into a small container – you don’t want to take that big bottle out every time and risk spilling it everywhere. A container with a tiny hole at the top and a lid works well. Put a little on a cotton pad or Q-tip and massage over the eye area. In a few seconds, all the makeup is broken up, and it wipes right off, leaving your lashes conditioned and hydrated. EVOO serves as a great moisturizer, so you don’t need to rinse it off. When you apply it, try not to get it in your eyes as some people say they have blurry vision after using it. Surprisingly, it is not greasy, so most people have absolutely no problems when using it and find it moisturizing, rather than greasy. It does not contain emulsifiers like commercial removers so it may not be as effective when removing some kinds of waterproof makeup.

14. Brown sugar and spice for skin exfoliation

With so many expensive exfoliators in stores, you may think that keeping your skin healthy is an expensive exercise. Fortunately, brown sugar offers you an easy, cheap way to exfoliate your skin. It helps to slough away those dead skin cells, leaving your body with a glow. It is gentler than a salt scrub as the particles are smaller and it doesn’t strip away the oils in the skin. Brown sugar contains glycolic acid and this acid keeps your skin healthy and fights bacteria. Your skin looks fresher and younger after using a brown sugar scrub because it supports cell turnover by breaking down the ‘glue’ that bonds the cells. It also helps sun-damaged and aging skin. It is a natural humectant which means that it absorbs moisture from the environment and hydrates your skin.

Credit: Freepik

Make a brown sugar and spice rub by mixing half a cup of brown sugar with two tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil, two teaspoons of instant oats and half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon and freshly grated nutmeg. The cinnamon brings blood flow to the surface, and the nutmeg has anti-inflammatory properties. Place the ingredients in a small bowl. Apply to the skin in circular motions and then shower and rinse off. Use a brown sugar scrub once a week to keep your skin in great shape. It is simple, cheap and works for all skin types. Once you have exfoliated your skin, remember to wear a sunscreen when going outside to avoid damaging the newly tender skin. In the winter, using a sugar scrub will help to exfoliate that top layer of skin and make sure that moisturizers penetrate deeper and hydrate for longer.

15. Aloe Vera for hair loss

We all shed hair, but some of us shed more than others and lose hair at an alarming rate. Aloe Vera can help to heal the scalp and bring the pH balance back to normal. While there’s no scientific evidence that it will cure baldness, it definitely soothes the scalp and provides the best possible environment for the growth of healthy hair. Aloe Vera contains certain enzymes which repair and heal damaged cells. It improves the health of the hair follicles, so it indirectly promotes healthy hair growth. It also has anti-inflammatory as well as antiviral and antifungal properties so it can soothe an aggravated, itchy scalp. Its high quantity of proteins, vitamins, and minerals nourish the follicles and the moisture content conditions the hair, locking in nutrients.

Credit: Freepik

Make a mixture of five tbls of Aloe Vera gel, three tbls of coconut oil and two tbls of honey. Apply the mixture to your hair and make sure you massage it in well right down to the roots. Cover your hair with a shower cap and wait for 25 minutes. Wash your hair with cool water and shampoo and then condition as normal. Use this mixture once a week. The coconut oil and the honey in the mixture add to the moisturizing effect and help to seal the moisture into the shafts of the hair. You need to have patience if you want to see the results from using Aloe Vera for hair growth. Hair doesn’t grow overnight, and you can’t expect your hair to suddenly stop falling out. However, if you persist with this treatment, you will definitely see an improvement in the health of your hair. Aloe Vera is pretty much one of the best things you can do for it.

Castor Oil for thicker eyelashes

16. Castor Oil for longer, thicker eyelashes

Your eyelashes do not have a very long life and fall out after a few weeks. If you want to make them look longer and thicker, a natural solution is to use castor oil. Castor oil is a vegetable oil that comes from the bean of the castor tree. Castor oil can prevent them from breaking because the hair follicles absorb it and it penetrates deep into the internal structure and has a hydrating effect. You have to apply the oil consistently and for some time if you want to see results. Castor oil contains proteins, vitamin E, and minerals. It is rich in triglycerides and has a wide range of health benefits. It penetrates deeply into the skin, impacting the health of the eyelids and the growth of the lashes. It’s best to test it before use on your eyelashes to see if you develop any irritation.

You need to remove all makeup from your eyes before using the castor oil. Then dip a mascara brush or a Q-tip into the oil. Apply to your eyelashes, just as you would apply mascara. Leave it on overnight. In the morning, gently remove the oil from your lashes with a mild makeup remover and cotton ball. Keep in mind that you should only use cold pressed castor oil because it’s pure and natural. You should never dip your mascara brush directly into the bottle, or you risk contamination. If you get some of the oil into your eyes, you need to splash them with water straight away as it may cause irritation. You can’t apply your makeup if you still have castor oil on your lashes because it will not set in.

17. Almond oil for brittle nails

Nails consist of hardened protein called keratin. Using nail polish can cause them to become discolored or brittle, and they can start to break more easily. Exposure to chemical-based harsh soaps and nail hardeners and nail polish removers can also damage nails, and they begin to chip and turn yellow. The worst thing to do is to try and hide any damage by applying more nail polish. Almond oil is a natural product you can use to restore their health. Almond oil contains essential antioxidants and nutrients such as vitamins A,B, and E. The vitamins help to keep the nails healthy and hydrated, protecting them against damage and stimulating new growth. Massaging the nails with almond oil coats them with a protective layer that naturally moisturizes them and stops them from cracking and breaking.

Credit: Shutterstock

Add a tablespoon of almond oil to a bowl with a little lemon juice and mix well. Massage the mixture directly onto your hands or soak nails in the bowl for 2 minutes. You could also take a cotton ball, soak it in the mixture and apply just like a nail polish remover. Alternatively, you can simply decant some of the oil into your hands and then gently rub it into the nails and cuticles to stimulate absorption. When you have been applying your almond oil for about two weeks, you should notice a visible change in the health of your nails. They should be smoother and shinier. Their elasticity should have improved too, so they are less likely to split or crack. To maintain this appearance, you can apply your almond oil once or twice a week. Almond oil also keeps your skin soft so your hands will benefit too.

18. Milk and Turmeric for dark elbows

Elbows are used extensively in normal daily activities, and we tend to forget about them and not care for them in the same way we do the rest of our body. The skin around the elbows is tougher and usually darker. The area is devoid of oil glands, so elbows become dry more quickly than other areas. Dead skin cells accumulate and can make them look rough and unsightly. You may even stop wearing short-sleeved shirts because you are so aware of your ugly elbows. There’s no reason to live with this problem as simple home remedies can be used to remove the rough layers and improve the skin. To help cleanse and even out the skin tone, one home remedy is to apply milk, honey, and turmeric. It can work wonders on the rough, dark, patchy skin. The milk is a natural bleaching agent because it contains lactic acid. Turmeric has antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities. It is believed to be good for a variety of skin conditions. The honey helps to moisturize, heal and hydrate the skin.

Credit: Freepik

Make a paste with raw milk, turmeric powder, and a little honey. Blend until the mixture is smooth. Apply the mixture in circular motions on the elbows and leave on for about 20 minutes. Wash off thoroughly with warm water. Make sure you take time to care for your elbows on a regular basis, washing them when you shower and applying moisturizer afterward. If you apply the milk, turmeric and honey paste for about a month on a regular basis, you should start to see smoother skin with a more even skin tone.

19. Tea Tree for acne

Tea tree oil is known for its antibacterial properties. It stands to reason, therefore, that it is an effective treatment for an acne outbreak. It goes to work immediately, attacking the bacteria that cause acne. This treats the existing outbreak and also prevents further outbreaks. Clogged pores cause pimples or blackheads. Our pores become blocked by our exposure to particles in the air our skin is exposed to.

Credit: Freepik

Tea tree oil cleanses and unblocks clogged pores. Clogged pores are a breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria. That’s why it’s essential to keep them clean. To apply tea tree oil, follow this procedure. Place a couple of drops of tea tree essential oil on a wad of cotton wool. Dilute it with a few drops of a carrier oil such as coconut oil. Dab the solution onto the spots where you have acne or clogged pores.

20. The organic cocoa powder as a natural bronzer

Fear not, because help is at hand in your grocery cupboard! Yes, that’s right, your pantry holds the perfect bronzer to finish off your look. 22. Gelatin for a clear complexion

Gelatin combined with activated charcoal makes an effective mask that can clear your complexion and leave it looking bright and beautiful. You can buy powdered gelatin from your local store. Buy activated charcoal capsules from a health store. Gelatin works well is because it comes from the skin and bones of animals. This makes it extremely rich in protein.

Credit: Freepik

You’ll need a pestle to crush the activated charcoal into a fine powder. If you don’t have a pestle, put the activated charcoal into a plastic bag and apply your rolling pin to it! Mix one tablespoon of gelatin with some warm water until it dissolves. Add it to a bowl containing the activated charcoal. Stir the mixture. It forms a gel-like substance. Put it on your face and leave it for about 30 minutes. The mask will set, and then you can peel it off.

23. Baking soda and Vinegar for soft heels

Let’s face it, we subject our feet to a lot of punishment. We spend plenty of time letting our feet carry our full weight, doing lots of walking and standing. And sometimes we put them into less than comfortable shoes! Is it any wonder the skin on our heels becomes tough and often cracks? Expensive foot creams sometimes don’t what the promise.
