9. Baking Soda for Blackheads

Blackheads are a common skin condition that often occurs as a feature of acne. They’re the result of excessive sebum production and can be caused by things like puberty, PMS, pregnancy and menopause. Blackheads appear dark due to melanin, a pigment that oxidizes and goes black when it’s exposed to the air. Blackheads form inside the pores on the skin when it becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells. They can be seen on the face, back, chest, neck, shoulders and arms, and can be treated by over-the-counter creams that contain ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, prescription medications, microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Contrary to popular belief, popping blackheads or forcibly removing them can often worsen the spot, inviting bacteria and infection that cause inflammation.

To prevent the formation of blackheads, wash your face regularly with a gentle antibacterial cleanser, use oil-free makeup products, and exfoliate at least once a week. A great, inexpensive exfoliant is baking soda. Baking soda is an alkalizing powder that is most commonly used in cooking and baking. When used on the skin, it softens the sebum and makes it easier to remove. It also sloughs away any dead skin cells and other debris that can cause skin problems. To use baking soda on blackheads, take one tablespoon of baking soda and add a few drops of water to it, enough to form a paste. You can also add a few drops of an essential oil for fragrance and added beauty benefit. Cleanse and wash your face with warm water, then apply the paste to your face while it’s still damp. Rub the mixture into your skin in small circles for two to three minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Follow it up with a gentle toner and a hydrating moisturizer.

Dandruff is a condition that occurs when the skin on the scalp flakes off. It’s also referred to as Pityriasis simplex capillitii, or scurf, and it is caused by a fungus known as Malassezia. Often, dandruff is experienced frequently by people with seborrheic dermatitis, a common skin condition that can affect the scalp, face, upper chest and back and causes the skin to appear red and flaky. Dandruff can also be caused by things like improper hygiene, yeast sensitivity, certain pre-existing skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema, lack of nutrition and even stress. Treatment for dandruff is relatively simple, and will usually involve an over-the-counter anti-fungal shampoo. These shampoos usually contain ingredients like salicylic acid, tea-tree oil, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide and zinc pyrithione, but if you’re looking for a more natural treatment, coconut oil and lemon juice can be just as effective.

Coconut oil is an extremely effective dandruff treatment because it contains natural anti-fungal properties that are able to kill the dandruff-causing fungus. Lemon juice is equally effective because it contains antimicrobial properties and citric acid which helps to bring dandruff under control. To use, simply mix two tablespoons of coconut oil with one teaspoon of lemon juice and massage it through your hair, rubbing it into the scalp. Leave it on to soak for at least one hour then rinse it out with cold water, followed by a mild shampoo. You can also add a squeeze of grapefruit juice for even better results. Beauty products don’t have to break your bank. By doing proper research and exploring different avenues, you can open up a whole new range of cheap, effective remedies.

We usually think the dark circles under our eyes are due to lack of sleep. While this can be true, other factors, such as age, pollution, improper diet and genetics are also culprits. The skin under the eyes is much thinner than that on the rest of your body.  Those dark blue circles are the result of light being reflected off the blood vessels sitting under the skin. As you get older, the skin becomes even thinner, and this is why many older people, more of than not, have dark circles under their eyes. Younger people also suffer from dark circles, especially if they’ve spent all night out on the town. When your body is tired, it produces more cortisol to give you the energy to stay awake. This increases blood volume which causes blood vessels to engorge (hence the dark circles).

The good news is that mint leaves can be used for dark circles. The menthol in the mint improves circulation, and it is a natural astringent which means it constricts the blood vessels under the eyes, making them less apparent. Mint is antiseptic, antibacterial and antimicrobial so it kills the toxins that help to damage the skin under the eyes. The vitamin C in the mint helps to promote collagen production which makes the skin firmer. Its soothing properties also help to relax the eyes. To use the mint, puree mint leaves in a blender to make a paste. Apply the paste under the eyes and leave on for 10-20 minutes. Wipe it off with a damp cloth and pat the area dry. Apply on a daily basis to benefit. You may add a tablespoon or two of olive oil to the mint paste for further nourishment.

Many clarifying formulas leave your hair feeling dry and frizzy. They take away the product buildup but affect the health of your hair. Many of them contain sulfates and other unnatural products that damage your hair over time. Apple cider vinegar rinses have the same results, and yet they do not strip your hair of its natural oils. It may sound strange because you would think that vinegar would be drying. On the contrary, it gently dissolves product buildup and leaves your hair feeling smooth and shiny. The citric acid in the apple cider vinegar destroys all the gunk and buildup and at the same time polishes each hair strand into a bouncy, hydrated state.

To make it all you need to do is mix one part of apple cider vinegar with three parts water and use it after shampoo. The best way to do it is to pour the ACV into a plastic cup before getting into the shower and then adding the water when you’re ready to rinse. Tilt your head back and pour the mixture over your scalp. Remember to keep your eyes and mouth closed just in case. Massage it into your scalp and then rinse thoroughly and condition as you normally would. You may not like the smell, and your shower will smell of apple cider vinegar. Your hair will also smell a little until it dries, but you won’t care because when it’s dry, you will see how awesome it looks. This rinse is safe for pretty much every type of hair – curly, frizzy, straight and even if its color-treated. As apple cider vinegar is acidic, you need to limit yourself to doing an ACV rinse once a week.

13. Extra Virgin Olive Oil for removing eye makeup

Most of us love wearing makeup but taking it off isn’t fun. You may have treated yourself to expensive eye makeup removers, only to find that you were allergic to them or didn’t do the job properly. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is all you need to remove stubborn eye makeup at the end of the day. You won’t have to scrub furiously to get rid of your makeup which is enough to give you more wrinkles. It does not burn or sting your eyes because it’s all natural. Some people suffer from sensitive eyes that seem to water frequently. Using EVOO to remove makeup instead of commercial ones that may contain thickeners, emulsifiers, etc. can be the answer for them instead of having to avoid wearing any makeup at all.

It is wise to pour the olive oil into a small container – you don’t want to take that big bottle out every time and risk spilling it everywhere. A container with a tiny hole at the top and a lid works well. Put a little on a cotton pad or Q-tip and massage over the eye area. In a few seconds, all the makeup is broken up, and it wipes right off, leaving your lashes conditioned and hydrated. EVOO serves as a great moisturizer, so you don’t need to rinse it off. When you apply it, try not to get it in your eyes as some people say they have blurry vision after using it. Surprisingly, it is not greasy, so most people have absolutely no problems when using it and find it moisturizing, rather than greasy. It does not contain emulsifiers like commercial removers so it may not be as effective when removing some kinds of waterproof makeup.

14. Brown sugar and spice for skin exfoliation

With so many expensive exfoliators in stores, you may think that keeping your skin healthy is an expensive exercise. Fortunately, brown sugar offers you an easy, cheap way to exfoliate your skin. It helps to slough away those dead skin cells, leaving your body with a glow. It is gentler than a salt scrub as the particles are smaller and it doesn’t strip away the oils in the skin. Brown sugar contains glycolic acid and this acid keeps your skin healthy and fights bacteria.  Your skin looks fresher and younger after using a brown sugar scrub because it supports cell turnover by breaking down the ‘glue’ that bonds the cells.  It also helps sun-damaged and aging skin. It is a natural humectant which means that it absorbs moisture from the environment and hydrates your skin.

Make a brown sugar and spice rub by mixing half a cup of brown sugar with two tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil, two teaspoons of instant oats and half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon and freshly grated nutmeg. The cinnamon brings blood flow to the surface, and the nutmeg has anti-inflammatory properties. Place the ingredients in a small bowl. Apply to the skin in circular motions and then shower and rinse off. Use a brown sugar scrub once a week to keep your skin in great shape. It is simple, cheap and works for all skin types. Make a mixture of five tbls of Aloe Vera gel, three tbls of coconut oil and two tbls of honey. Apply the mixture to your hair and make sure you massage it in well right down to the roots. Cover your hair with a shower cap and wait for 25 minutes. Wash your hair with cool water and shampoo and then condition as normal. Use this mixture once a week. Your eyelashes do not have a very long life and fall out after a few weeks. If you want to make them look longer and thicker, a natural solution is to use castor oil. Castor oil is a vegetable oil that comes from the bean of the castor tree. Castor oil can prevent them from breaking because the hair follicles absorb it and it penetrates deep into the internal structure and has a hydrating effect. You have to apply the oil consistently and for some time if you want to see results. Castor oil contains proteins, vitamin E, and minerals. It is rich in triglycerides and has a wide range of health benefits. It penetrates deeply into the skin, impacting the health of the eyelids and the growth of the lashes. It’s best to test it before use on your eyelashes to see if you develop any irritation.

You need to remove all makeup from your eyes before using the castor oil. Then dip a mascara brush or a Q-tip into the oil. Apply to your eyelashes, just as you would apply mascara. Leave it on overnight. In the morning, gently remove the oil from your lashes with a mild makeup remover and cotton ball. Keep in mind that you should only use cold pressed castor oil because it’s pure and natural. You should never dip your mascara brush directly into the bottle, or you risk contamination. If you get some of the oil into your eyes, you need to splash them with water straight away as it may cause irritation. You can’t apply your makeup if you still have castor oil on your lashes because it will not set in.

17. Almond oil for brittle nails

Nails consist of hardened protein called keratin. Using nail polish can cause them to become discolored or brittle, and they can start to break more easily. Exposure to chemical-based harsh soaps and nail hardeners and nail polish removers can also damage nails, and they begin to chip and turn yellow. The worst thing to do is to try and hide any damage by applying more nail polish. Almond oil is a natural product you can use to restore their health. Almond oil contains essential antioxidants and nutrients such as vitamins A,B, and E. The vitamins help to keep the nails healthy and hydrated, protecting them against damage and stimulating new growth. Massaging the nails with almond oil coats them with a protective layer that naturally moisturizes them and stops them from cracking and breaking.

Add a tablespoon of almond oil to a bowl with a little lemon juice and mix well. Massage the mixture directly onto your hands or soak nails in the bowl for 2 minutes. You could also take a cotton ball, soak it in the mixture and apply just like a nail polish remover. Alternatively, you can simply decant some of the oil into your hands and then gently rub it into the nails and cuticles to stimulate absorption. When you have been applying your almond oil for about two weeks, you should notice a visible change in the health of your nails. They should be smoother and shinier. Their elasticity should have improved too, so they are less likely to split or crack. To maintain this appearance, you can apply your almond oil once or twice a week. Almond oil also keeps your skin soft so your hands will benefit too.

18. Milk and Turmeric for dark elbows

Elbows are used extensively in normal daily activities, and we tend to forget about them and not care for them in the same way we do the rest of our body. The skin around the elbows is tougher and usually darker. The area is devoid of oil glands, so elbows become dry more quickly than other areas. Dead skin cells accumulate and can make them look rough and unsightly. You may even stop wearing short-sleeved shirts because you are so aware of your ugly elbows. There’s no reason to live with this problem as simple home remedies can be used to remove the rough layers and improve the skin. To help cleanse and even out the skin tone, one home remedy is to apply milk, honey, and turmeric. It can work wonders on the rough, dark, patchy skin. The milk is a natural bleaching agent because it contains lactic acid. Turmeric has antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities. It is believed to be good for a variety of skin conditions. The honey helps to moisturize, heal and hydrate the skin.

Make a paste with raw milk, turmeric powder, and a little honey. Blend until the mixture is smooth. Apply the mixture in circular motions on the elbows and leave on for about 20 minutes. Wash off thoroughly with warm water. Make sure you take time to care for your elbows on a regular basis, washing them when you shower and applying moisturizer afterward. If you apply the milk, turmeric and honey paste for about a month on a regular basis, you should start to see smoother skin with a more even skin tone.

To apply tea tree oil, follow this procedure. Place a couple of drops of tea tree essential oil on a wad of cotton wool. Dilute it with a few drops of a carrier oil such as coconut oil. You need about one tablespoon of Aloe vera gel. Combine it with three tablespoons of water. Filtered water is best. Make sure you mix the two ingredients well. Massage it into your facial skin. If you do this every day, you’ll soon see your skin looking more moisturized and glowing with health.

Gelatin combined with activated charcoal makes an effective mask that can clear your complexion and leave it looking bright and beautiful. You can buy powdered gelatin from your local store.
