You don’t need to be ashamed of those intrusive thoughts.
Have you ever experienced having strange thoughts or unwelcome images pop into your head seemingly out of nowhere? No need to worry. You are not alone. Almost everyone has experienced having an intrusive thought appear in their heads without warning. Most of them are strange and can be distressing, like imagining yourself doing something violent or illegal, even though you’re one of the most diligent and law-abiding citizens on the planet. Some parents even experience having the thought of harming their baby, even though they’re very loving and gentle and couldn’t even hurt a fly.
Intrusive thoughts are common and are so random that you won’t even see them coming. No matter how diligently you shield your brain from negative thoughts, you happen to let your guard down every once in a while, and when you’re not thinking about it, that’s when they appear. If you’ve ever had a random thought that makes you cringe or shake your head afterward in an attempt to clear it, then you most certainly just had an intrusive thought, and while we cannot control what thoughts or when they pop up in our heads, there certainly is no shame in having them.
