24. The sea surrounds Vis Island in Croatia.
Vis Island is the farthest inhabited island in Croatia. Surrounded by the stunning azure sea, visitors are invited to step right into the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. It is another place rich in history, as the Yugoslav Army base used the area for four decades until the locals abandoned it. It sat empty until 1989, but the isolation did wonders to keep the unspoiled charms from being touched. There are sandy beaches and a 4th-century bronze head of the goddess Artemis. You should also check out the St. Jerome’s Church and Monastery, built over an ancient Roman theater (via The Guardian).
