An estimated four million people experience ulcers every year, and most of these are not severe – unless they break through the stomach wall, which causes a medical emergency that can be life-threatening. There are genetic risk factors for developing ulcers, and the food you also eat matters. Taking many painkillers, drinking too much coffee and alcohol, and smoking are all unhealthy habits.
