Skipping Out On Breakfast Is Depriving Your Brain
You’ve probably heard that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” While the jury is still out on the truth of that adage, breakfast certainly seems to be the most important meal for your brain. At least, that’s what a recent study on how our meals affect brain function found. The study looked at different meal habits in older adults in China. The meal patterns included having three roughly equally-sized meals, getting the majority of calories from a single meal, eating small meals throughout the day, and skipping breakfast in favor of a larger lunch and dinner. The study found that having three balanced meals a day was linked to a slower decline in cognition, which is our brain’s ability to think and process information. People who skipped breakfast had the fastest cognitive decline. Other studies have shown that eating a healthy breakfast boosts your ability to focus and remember important things. A breakfast packed with protein, fiber, and nutritious fruits or vegetables may be just what your brain needs to get you through the day.
