25. Smoking can make your skin get wrinkles faster.

We all know that cigarettes are not suitable for you in many ways. But one thing that people do not talk about as much is how smoking over time can make your skin dry and give the appearance of wrinkles. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can speed up the aging process showing crow’s feet, uneven skin complexion, puffiness below the eyes, thinner lips, wrinkles around the mouth, a grayish tone in lighter skin, and more. Having premature wrinkles is a no-go, mainly because it can even turn your hair grey! But why do cigarettes damage your so much your skin?

Cigarettes have so much going on. Tobacco alone has almost 4,000 chemical components, which most of it is not great for your body, so the more you do it, the worst is going to get. Including in the components is Nicotine which can cause blood vessels to narrow, which blocks the oxygen flow and nutrients to be delivered to your skin cells. Other chemicals can cause molecular events that can damage your skin elasticity. Plus, the heat and smoke from a single cigarette can damage the surface of the skin. The sad part is that the damage is irreversible, so it is better to stay as far away as you can from cigarettes.

24. Drinking smoothies will age you faster by giving you wrinkles.

This might sound a bit weird, but remember when you try to drink that extra thick frappuccino, that face you made trying hard to suck on the straw to taste it? Well, that might not help to keep that youthful look on your face. According to this interview with Dr. Heather Woolery-Loyd, and Dr. Rebecca Baxt, straw drinking, same as smoking, can create wrinkles around your mouth because of how we pursed our lips. Repetitive muscle motion over some time will increase those fine lines. It sounds crazy that enjoying your favorite drink can cause wrinkles, but it’s not as bad as you might think.

Pursing lips is a normal movement for those who like to express emotion, like frowning. Thus, being just a bit conscious about it will be enough. If you are a smoker, the probabilities of getting those wrinkles are higher since our mouth does most of the same movements we do from drinking from a straw, so you can say if you do both actions often, there are higher chances of getting them fast. So go slow with that drink and enjoy! Dr. Woolery-Lloyd says that you will need to drink many smoothies with a straw every day for around 100 minutes for those wrinkles to start showing.

23. Not exercising is terrible in many ways.

We all know that exercising is an essential key to staying healthy and living a long life. It will keep us active for much longer, plus you will feel great and energized for decades to come. So what happens when we don’t exercise at all? As you might have guessed, it’s not good at all! Being sedentary for long periods throughout the day can lead to getting two or more diseases in the future. In fact, not moving those muscles will even cause your body to decay faster, and your appearance will look older than your actual age.

It feels scary, and it’s hard finding time in your day to go to the gym and work out, especially with how busy your life is. But you don’t need to go and do some hardcore fitness routine that many celebrities do. Just go walking around the block (or even in your home!), go cycling, and low impact exercises will help wonders. Every little step will work for you, and it doesn’t need to be a daily thing either. With only three days a week, your body will feel and see the difference. Just put on some music, or watch your favorite show while keeping in shape can do wonders in the long haul. We are pretty sure you’ve heard the benefits of brushing your teeth every day already. Nevertheless, this is something that needs to be mentioned because it’s so important to have good oral care. In fact, gum inflammation can also make it harder to decrease sugar levels, especially if you have diabetes. Also, some foods can stain your teeth. Foods that are very acidic, like lemonades or orange juice, coffee, carbonated beverages, and tea, can make your teeth look yellowish. So brightening toothpaste or strips can help you maintain your teeth looking pearly white and healthy. So give some love to your teeth and see the difference it will make to make you see and feel younger.

21. Not having the best pillowcase to sleep with cause cause wrinkles.

Finding the best sleep is an excellent way to feel good. Proper rest will keep you having lots of energy and looking like a million bucks. However, have you thought about your pillowcase? Maybe you didn’t know, but sleeping ont he wrong one can lead to aging. Yes, it can increase the chances of getting premature wrinkles and sagging on your face. If you tend to sleep on your side or belly down, this is one thing you need to keep an eye out for. Not only does having the wrong pillowcase brings those wrinkles, but it also damages your hair. Do you have frizzy hair, and split ends? Talk about a bad hair day! So what’s the secret to keeping your hair and skin looking flawless as soon as you wake up?

The suitable pillowcase has been on the market for only a few years, and it’s a silk pillowcase! The problem with cotton pillowcases is that they don’t let your skin move smoothly, which ends up bringing those pillow marks on your face when you wake up. Silk pillowcases have a very smooth surface that will feel like it slips away and lets your skin feel tight. Plus, your hair won’t get pulled or damaged while you sleep. Silk also won’t take moisture and the natural oils away from your face and hair. That means, you are keeping it hydrated for longer, mainly because we lose water while we sleep. A study in the Journal Dermatology Reports showed that silk pillowcases could effectively treat atopic dermatitis, or eczema. A pillowcase can help the skin not to look so red and less itchy. It can even stop flare-ups in psoriasis patients! All of these are great reasons to change into a silk pillowcase and throw away the rest.

20. Ignoring your mental health isn’t a good idea.

In this day and age, with a pandemic right there to haunt us every day, it can be hard to find that inner peace and happiness that we want so much. It can be very stressful for everyone to feel like your freedom is limited. Besides, there are some things you can do as you used to. Those feelings can get in our heads and make anyone feel helpless and depressed. Sometimes people forget to feel young and energetic, even when times are good. 19. Being a huge perfectionist might age you faster.

We live in a social media world where everyone shares everything. That goes double for what they perceive to show their personality. Some people like oversharing some flaws, but everyone wants to show how perfect everything is. You might ask, “but what’s wrong with being a perfectionist?” Well, for once, it gives you a sense of pressure to impress that can cause stress and anxiety. Stress alone can cause your body to age quicker. Psychotherapist Mike Dow, PsyD, Ph.D., explains, “Perfectionism plagues the brain with negative thoughts which can cause a release of stress hormones, and can accelerate aging.”

There is nothing wrong with wanting things to look perfect, but obsessing for perfection won’t bring you any good, and it might make things even more difficult for you. Freeing yourself from thoughts that might upset you or make you feel worse is a good strategy to live an entire and prosperous life. Finding the balance to do great in everything you are doing without stressing too much about it can be tricky. Still, it is doable, and it’ll make you feel so much better when you achieve everything you’ve dreamed of without putting your mental health at risk and still looking the best you can be.

18. Don’t forget your sunscreen, unless you want to age quicker!

You might think that using sunscreen is only for summertime or when you go to the pool or beach, but the sun doesn’t take a vacation! Your skin needs a lot of care and attention, especially if you don’t want liver spots, sagging, and wrinkles to show earlier than expected, plus skin cancer is no fun to have. Photoaging is something that everyone is exposed to, more than others if you are an outdoorsy person, and this is why it is so essential to protect your skin every day, no matter if you are going outside or not, the light will always find a way to get to you.

The best way to protect your skin is to use a moisturizer with sunscreen every day. The dermatologist recommends using one that has at least 30 SPF and uses it in every part of the body that might get sunlight, including arms, legs, and especially the face. If you are wearing makeup, put the sunscreen moisturizer first to ensure that your skin is protected. Extra props if the foundation you are using already has sunscreen. It is also important to note that sunscreen stops being effective after 2 hours, so remember to reapply. Always keep a tube with you; remember that the rays can still affect your skin even if it’s cloudy, so it’s better safe than sorry.

17. Slow down your coffee intake.

Sometimes you need that cup of joe in the morning. It helps start your day so yo do not feel like a zombie at work. However, it can be hard saying no to more than one cup of coffee a day. That is especially true if you are hypnotized by the smell of freshly brewed espresso. The problem with that latte is that it can reduce the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA for short). That is the one that makes us look young and reduces inflammation. This hormone drops as we age. Therefore, drinking coffee makes it fall faster than expected, making us look older.

In 2014, a study showed that caffeine could also slow your wound healing process and reduce the synthesized collagen in the skin cells. Suppose you like your coffee with milk and sugar. In that case, the aging process happens even faster because sugar and dairy products can also cause acne, so it’s not good news for your skin. The other thing that caffeine does is a diuretic. In other words, it can cause dehydration. Since your skin needs to be hydrated, it tends to make things worse, so it’s always good to count your cups of coffee or have a bottle of water ready after your morning mug to compensate for the liquid you will lose. If you can’t live without it, it is recommended to only drink one or two cups daily, so you can still get your pumpkin latte, just don’t overdo it and drink lots of water afterward.

16. Be careful with alcohol.

It’s Friday night, and after a stressful workday, your body wants to relax and go out with your friends for a couple of drinks to celebrate the weekend. But if you still want to retain flawless skin, you need to cut down on the alcohol intake. Alcohol has many effects on the body that can make you regret it in the long haul. To keep your skin firm and elastic, you need good hydration from your good ol’ pal H2O who does wonders not only to your skin but your entire body. So what exactly does alcohol do to your body, and what can we do about it?

For once, your weekend celebration is not canceled yet. Moderation can be a good alternative and also what you drink. Wine has been proven to have some good anti-aging benefits when you drink at least one glass a day, Plus it’s great for the heart. But going for a second or third glass has been associated with lowering your lifespan, plus a few more problems. Studies have found that alcohol can also prevent you from having a good night’s sleep, preventing you from going into a deep sleep which can also cause wrinkles to appear faster. So you can have some fun but always try to remember to use a bit of moderation, if you want more parties to come in the future.

15. Having bad posture will age you faster.

Working an office job can be exhausting and draining sometimes. Spending hours sitting in an uncomfortable office chair won’t do you any good, especially for your posture. It’s hard not to slouch a bit when your screen is lower than your eye level or just because it feels less straining to do it. If you don’t want to have a hunchback later in life, it’s time to correct that posture. Because of phones, tablets, and laptops, the number of young people slouching is at an all-time high. They call it the “tech neck.” It’s weakening your spinal structure and causing ailments like arthritis, which is more common in the elderly.

It can also weaken your joints and muscles and give you back pains, plus it can also bring out neck and chin wrinkles sooner than expected because of looking down so often. The best way to fight the hunchback is to do neck and back exercises, work on your posture by being more aware of it, and if you work in an office, maybe getting your monitor higher can actually help your neck stay up longer. Changing your chair into an orthopedic one can also help with your posture. Using your phone less often can also help relieve your neck of the strain. Visiting an orthopedic doctor can also help find a better way to keep your posture up and keep your back and shoulders healthy without permanent deformities and with no pains.

14. Protect those eyes from the sun or you might look twice your age.

We are pretty sure you have forgotten your sunglasses at home when you are about to go to the beach, and it’s the worst because your eyes will bother you so much with the sun on your face that you won’t be able to really enjoy your time there. The sun and even the blue light from your phone and computer are the enemies of your vision, and it is time to fight it. Your eyes have the most sensitive skin around them, which means that you need to take extra good care of them if you don’t want any wrinkles. But in the same way, you need to take care of your eyes because getting too much light on them can cause blurry vision, cataracts, and even cancer.

Thankfully, there are a few ways to help your eyes keep themselves happy and healthy for many years to come. First, it is essential to use an eye cream around your eyes to keep that area hydrated and protected. To do so, always use your ring finger and gently massage in a circular motion around the eyes until the skin absorbs it. It is essential to use sunglasses, even on cloudy days, to protect them from UV lights to protect your eyes. And to protect your eyes from the blue light emanating from your phone, laptop, tablets, and even office lights, doctors recommend blue-light-blocking glasses, which will help so that your vision doesn’t get too tired and protect it from rays that can damage your sight after a while. Plus, you’ll look super stylish too.

13. Fat-free foods will not help you age better.

Winter season is getting closer, so that means that you will want to look your best for that family reunion, with clothes that fit you perfectly without feeling bloated. So you are thinking of getting into a quick diet to lose those extra pounds. You might think that the best way to lose belly fat is to have a low-fat diet and let your body do the work. But the problem with that approach is that your body needs that fat. Why? To maintain that glow on your skin and help pump a healthy heart. Fat can help you in so many ways that you might not even know, so it’s better not to push it away.

There are many studies about the effects of having a low-fat diet, but we can be confident that our body needs some type of fat to function and have a healthy lifestyle. Fats like Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish and some nuts, are a must if you want to keep your youthful-looking skin and heart working like a well-oiled machine. The one type of fat you need to avoid is trans fat, which can weaken your skin’s blood flow. Losing weight fast can also put your body at risk of many diseases and decrease your skin’s elasticity. Experts recommend that the best way to lose those extra pounds is to have a balanced diet with healthy fats and exercise to complement and make your body stronger.

12. Good sex means everything if you want to age gracefully.

This might be something you didn’t expect to see on a list of habits that can make you age faster, but it is an important one. You might be missing out on an excellent anti-aging with lots of benefits that having sex has, especially regarding your mental health. It has been discovered that achieving an orgasm can help you boost your self-esteem, decrease depression, and anxiety by giving it a boost of oxytocin. This hormone and neuropeptide are responsible for feeling the urge for social bonding, reproduction, and other factors after childbirth. It is also known as the happy hormone, which explains why our mood changes after climax.

After researching the matter for years, Dr. Michael Roizen, author of the book Real Age- Are you as young as you can be, explains some of the anti-aging effects. He found that “Having sex at least twice a week can make your real age 1.6 years younger than if you had sex only once a week” In a study that lasted ten years, they found that men that had at least two orgasms a week had lower risks of dying from heart failure and other diseases. Plus, it puts you in a more positive mindset than without having sex at all. Just remember always to protect yourself when going in to fill that quota of climaxing twice a week.

11. Comfort food is a huge problem.

Sometimes after having a stressful day, all you can think of is having a delicious glazed donut or eating your favorite chips just to make you feel a bit better and relaxed. But even if sometimes it’s hard to resist that cheese danish, it’s better to look the other way if you want to be healthy and look younger. Processed foods have barely any nutrients and are full of sugars, bad fats, and cholesterol that, in the long haul, will bring you health problems, like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. When eaten regularly, the sugars will bind with collagen and elastin, which are essential for keeping your skin young, can get damaged, and it makes their work harder to repair, ending you with saggy and wrinkly skin.

It has even shown that junk food will make you feel lethargic and worse than before, hours after being consumed. Furthermore, if the snack has a lot of salt, you will retain water, making you feel bloated. It’s hard to let go of those yummy snacks, but we recommend you exchange them for healthier alternatives that are high in nutrients to help you and your skin feel radiant. Exchanging that cheesy dip for something like hummus is a great alternative, and it’s delicious too. Or how about a handful of salty peanuts or walnuts to get some good fats in your system. Get yourself a bowl of tasty fresh berries to make that sweet tooth happy, and in the end, your whole body will thank you. Plus, people will notice how amazing your skin will look.

10. Not having a hobby isn’t satisfying at any age.

After a hard day at work, your brain and body will only ask you to relax and watch some TV or movie until it’s time for bed. But there is something that your brain needs to keep you happy and in a better mood: a hobby! Yes, this might sound crazy, but we all need something to relax and give us that sense of achievement and happiness. According to a George Washington University study, people who have a pastime like singing, playing an instrument, painting, or reading need fewer doctor’s visits and less medication. Plus, they have a happier life than those who have no hobbies at all.

Not only is it great to have a hobby when you are an adult, but also later in life when other conditions start developing in the brain. Activating that creative muscle in older adults positively impacts them. It keeps them independent rather than depending on someone else to survive. By being more active with activities, not only will it keep your mind and body young but in a more positive mood throughout the day. So no matter your age, or if you’re too busy with work and responsibilities, find a space in your schedule to do something to relax the mind and feel happy. In the end, it might be the best medicine any doctor didn’t prescribe.

9. Demand a good night sleep if you want to age better.

Sometimes it’s hard to get enough hours of sleep when you have so much work to do in the day, and your brain keeps reminding you when you are trying to sleep. The thing is that your body needs to have the proper rest to function and look refreshed and healthy. Getting seven to nine hours of sleep per night will do wonders for your skin and brain. A study from UCLA found that human cells tend to age faster when your body doesn’t get enough time to rest. People who have frequent good quality sleep have low intrinsic skin compared to those who don’t. It shows the development of wrinkles and sagging on the face and body.

What’s even worse news for your skin is that since you’re not getting enough sleep, your skin doesn’t have the resting time to recover from ultraviolet lights that you’ve received during the day. Having a slower recovery from those lights means that your skin is at a higher risk of developing problems in the future. Do you have insomnia? It can take you a long time to fall asleep. Finding alternatives like listening to relaxing music to doze off, drinking some chamomile tea, or doing a quick exercising routine before bedtime can help with how much rest you’ll get. Starting the process of getting your body to shut down can be tricky at first, but with consistency to find your groove, it’ll get easier to fall into dreamland and wake up refreshed and ready for the day ahead.

8. Cut back on makeup otherwise it will age you faster.

Makeup is so fun to transform you into the queen you always wanted to be to turn heads on the dance floor. But after a night of dancing and partying, there is something you always need to remember to do: take that makeup off! Yes, sometimes you are too tired and sleepy to go in the bathroom and wash your face thinking the water might make you more alert rather than exhausted, but hear me; you need to do it if you want your pores not to be clogged and your skin to get fine lines all over it.

It feels ironic that you wear makeup to look attractive and young, but using it too much, might make you look older than before. Regardless, your face can’t breathe correctly with makeup, and clogged pores will not let the skin recover from air pollution and oxidative stress of the day, which can damage the skin’s collagen and thus bring wrinkles sooner than expected. It is recommended to use a face cleanser and finish pampering your skin with face lotions to keep your face hydrated and elastic. Speaking of hydration, do not dry it with a cloth or towel after you wash your face. Leave it wet so that the skin can absorb that extra water; your face will thank you later.

7. Give those muscles some love.

It’s time to use that gym membership that you’ve been paying for but have only used twice. Getting in shape is an integral part of staying healthy and looking flawless. But if you are only doing cardio, there is still more work to do to real your goals. Studies have shown that muscle strength has a direct connection with how well you age. When you increase your muscle mass with strength training, it will also strengthen your brain, heart, and bones, which will make you feel stronger, more energetic, and younger. You don’t need to go to the gym to achieve your goals. Even at home, you can get to it with straightforward exercises and using household items.

The other benefit of muscle strengthening is that you burn calories faster and effectively, plus your metabolism is active. Since lean muscles require more calories than fat, your metabolism will have a good workout, too, working more quickly to say goodbye to those extra pounds. You will only need to do 15 minutes a day to get the results you’ve been dreaming of. You can use water bottles as dumbbells or just use your own body weight to keep yourself in shape. Doing a couple of squats, shoulder taps, and triceps strengthening is all you need to feel younger than ever!

6. If you don’t want to age quickly, downsize those big meals.

Going to an all-you-can-eat buffet is hugely tempting and so dangerous when it comes to keeping yourself in shape. And it’s even worse when you are in the yearly family reunion surrounded by all the dishes that will transport you to your childhood. It’s hard to stop the temptation of eating everything you see on the table. Still, to stay on the road to staying young and healthy, it’s more than necessary to keep an eye on not overeating. And yes, having big meals can accelerate aging by putting oxidative stress on your stress which causes your cell to age faster.

There are also other problems that overeating causes. For instance, when you keep adding food to an already full stomach, it will stretch and pressure the organs around it, which creates that uncomfortable feeling. Your stomach will go back to normal if it’s just a one-time thing. Still, if you commonly do it, your stomach will stay stretched permanently, which means you will need more food moving forward, which can turn into lots of digesting problems. It will also take a longer time to digest your food correctly, making your metabolism slower at the same time. So remember to learn the signs your body sends you when it has enough food in its system.

5. Don’t forget about your friends.

Having people you trust and can rely on, in good and bad moments of your life, is something that we can’t take for granted. Your friends can be considered an extended part of your family because life can be a bit boring without them. Because believe it or not, your friends do more than just joke and gossip with you; they can even have anti-aging benefits that you didn’t even know! You don’t need to have a million friends, with just a handful that make you feel like you’re not alone and can trust with your life; it’s enough to make your soul and body better.

Studies have shown that having a bond and a close relationship with a group of close friends can lead to a life full of happiness and tend to be in a steady mindset about your future. This leads to a better way to handle stress and better social skills. They have also found that loneliness can shorten your lifespan because of depression, so having good company is great for the soul. So next time you think of skipping on an outing to see your friends, just remember that they might be the key to having a happy and long life with great company.

4. Relax from time to time.

Life is so busy and crazy sometimes that you might forget to stop from time to time to breathe in. It is difficult to stop working and doing things when you have a high-demand job and other responsibilities. The problem with this is that your body, after a while, will send you signs to tell you that it had enough, and it’ll start showing signs of aging very quickly. Harvard Medical School did a study showing that chronic stress affects the body cells, especially the telomeres, which contain genetic information. With lots of stress, telomeres will start getting shorter until they eventually die. This can end up bringing many serious illnesses into your body, including cancer and heart disease.

Finnish researchers even found that having too much stress can shorten your life up to 3 years! It’s complicated sometimes to keep your cool in difficult situations. Still, you can do a few tricks to ease out when the pressure of everyday life is getting too much. First, if you can, depending on your situation, play some music that can help you relax. Music is a great way to find your inner peace and forget about all that is stressing you out. Secondly, find a quiet space, close your eyes, slowly take a deep breath through your nose, and exhale through your mouth. This exercise can help your mind relax and will help you focus on the task ahead without feeling stressed out. And lastly, focusing on your breathing thru meditation has been proven to calm the nerves and help you make better decisions. So don’t lose your cool, and get going!

3. Drink lots of water to slow down the aging process.

You are made of 60% water, so why do you need more, right? Well, if we want to keep our skin and organs hydrated and working in order, that is what we need to drink. Although sometimes you just want a nice cold soda, you need to know that drinking or overeating sugar can make you look older. Plus, it can put you at risk of getting health problems in the future since it doesn’t have any nutritional value. Scientists have proven that drinking water does not eliminate wrinkles or make your skin firmer. However, it does have a few other things that will make you feel younger and healthier.

For once, water can lubricate your cushion joints, protect your spinal cord, and other tissues around it, so that you have better movement and lower the chances of arthritis. Plus, it can help regulate your body’s temperature, especially in hot climates or exercising. If you’re not a massive fan of drinking too much water, there are alternatives that you can drink that can help you keep hydrated and has some nutritional value. You can try plain coffee (in moderation, we talked about it earlier), tea ( the green kind is fantastic!), water seltzer, or even flavored water. If you are a fan of citrus beverages, you can try adding a few squeezes of lemon, grapefruit, or any fruit that you like to give a nice twist to your water. Just try different things until you find the right one that will make your body feel fresh.

2. People won’t know your age when you keep your skin cool and refreshed.

If you live in a hot weather environment, you get that the sun and high temperatures can be brutal. Without you noticing, you can become dehydrated very fast. Dehydration can be extremely dangerous, especially if you don’t notice the signs your body will give you. Over time, you will also see a difference in your skin. If you are in a hot, dry room for too long, your skin will start feeling dry and itchy. If you don’t do something about it, it can get under your skin way too much. Having dry skin can also decrease skin elasticity. In the long haul, that can turn into higher chances of getting wrinkles.

Some studies have suggested that having dry skin alone won’t cause wrinkles, but it contributes. A team of researchers tested this theory by getting a group of people in a room with high humidity and another group in a room with low humidity. They found that people in the dry room show more wrinkling skin on their faces, especially when they smile, proving the point that moisture is essential if you want to look radiant. It is vital that you not only do you need to drink lots of fluids in hot temperatures but also moisturize your skin often. They have found that people with oily skin tend to show fewer wrinkles, even with more skin breakouts. Meanwhile, people with dry skin age quicker, so don’t forget to bring your favorite face cream if you are one of those people.

1. Leave those old grudges behind.

Everyone has had a heated discussion with someone that ends in many feelings of resentment and anger. Those emotions can stay with you for a while, depending on how big the fight was. All those negative feelings in the back of your mind can come back to haunt you from time to time and stop you from having your best life. Holding on to those grudges involving a loved one, coworker, or anyone else can affect your mental being. Over time, it brings anxiety and even depression, which can physically cause you to age quicker. And the thing here is not much about how you can look on the outside. What matters is how it will make you feel inside and how to deal with those emotions.

First off, you need to understand that whatever you are feeling, it’s only affecting your life, and not anyone else. So, to free yourself from those thoughts, you must cope, heal, and move forward. You only live once (YOLO!). Utilize the little time you have in this world to finding your happiness. Surrounding yourself with good vibes while throwing away the ones that don’t feel good is the best thing you can do. Do not hesitate to seek help from a professional. That is especially true if you think it’s too much for you to deal with on your own. A professional can help you move on your time and terms. In the end, letting go of all that is not good for your mind and body will help you glow as you have never glowed before. That alone can make you look radiant, young, and completely free. Don’t be afraid to look for that happy place and be better.
