With the Japanese Diet, You Must Use Variety and Balance
At the core of a traditional Japanese diet is a way of eating that incorporates a wide variety of nutrient-rich foods in well-balanced, small-portioned meals. Japanese people may eat as many as 30 different foods every day. Eating such a diverse array of food ensures you get all the nutrients you need to be healthy and keeps you from getting bored with your food. From an early age, Japanese children are encouraged to eat multiple foods from five distinct groups. The categories are protein (meat, seafood, tofu), calcium (dairy, small fish, seaweed), essential vitamins and minerals (fruits and vegetables), carbohydrates (steamed rice, noodles, and other grains), and healthy fats (nuts and seeds).
